"Where can I get hardcover books?"
Dear Laura:
I'm sure you get this question a lot: When is your next book coming out? Do you have plans for more after that?
Frank
Dear Frank,
You're right, I get at least two emails a week from fans asking when The Inheritor is coming out. (That's the name of the sixth book in the Marketplace series, for those who don't know.) The answer is: when I finish it. And as of the end of December, I'm working on Chapter Four, so it'll be a while yet - don't hold your breath, it won't be out for at least another year.
I do have plans for several other Marketplace books down the road as well. Right now, I have four in mind:
After The Inheritor, I'm planning a Marketplace short story collection, co-written with my wife, Karen. She wrote a few of the stories in Book Four, The Academy, so you know she's on my wavelength. "Slaves of the Marketplace" will focus on the "B" characters peppered through the novels, the walk-on slaves we all wish we knew more about. Expect to see stories about Leon, Greta, Robert, Mackenzie, and even Sharon in that collection. But don't expect to see it earlier than 2010.
Then, I'm going to do a book about Owners. I want to write a story from the perspective of the Owners. I'm thinking of playing a long-time Marketplace family against a nouveau-riche Johnny-come-Lately Marketplace Owner, the way you'd find in those Harold Robbins/Sidney Sheldon/Jeffery Archer books of the wealthy versus the super-wealthy. There will be some Owners who show up in Book Six, the Inheritor, who will probably be in this as-yet-unnamed novel. When will this be published? Not for at least five years.
My next two planned projects do have names. The first is an historical Marketplace novel, taking place right after the end of the Civil War - I'm setting it in Baltimore, the birthplace of the American Marketplace. It will be called "Anderson's Line." If you don't know why, you haven't read my books. And don't expect to see this one any time soon - I'll need to take time off from work to do some serious research, probably in Baltimore and at Duke University (which houses one of our country's largest collection of slave narratives). So until I can take that kind of time off, this book is still in the making only in my head.
Then, a vanity project: in fact, I plan a subscription-only limited edition run of this project, open first to the people on my Marketplace fan list. While I"m not sure whether it will be a biography or written as an autobiography, I do know the name: PARKER. And no, I'm not taking advance reservations. But I do promise that it will be written.
